Are you ready to take your skills to the next level? One area that is often overlooked but essential to any successful production is understanding electrical circuits. Don't worry if you're a beginner; we've got you covered with this guide to understanding electrical flow.
Expert explains electrical conductors to a curious learner.
First things first, let's talk about conductors. Conductors are materials that allow electricity to flow through them with very little resistance. In the audio world, we use conductors to connect points of a circuit together, allowing the electricity to flow freely. When you plug something into an outlet, it draws current, and the current flow through a conductor is measured in amperes (amps).
Now, let's talk about voltage. Voltage is the electric pressure that causes current to flow. It's represented by the letter E and can be measured in volts (V). The greater the voltage, the greater the current flow. Voltage is fundamental in a directional current, where electricity flows in one direction, like in a battery.

But what about alternating current (AC)? AC is different because it can travel long distances without voltage loss, which is why it's so popular. In a parallel circuit, each piece of equipment draws a certain amount of current; the total current is the sum of the individual branch currents. On the other hand, in a series circuit, the number of amps will be continuous through all components wired in series.

When designing circuitry, engineers and technicians document all the components in the circuit and what's happening within them. Understanding these basics will help you to troubleshoot any issues that may arise during production.

So, what can you do to improve your understanding of electrical circuits? Start by learning the basics of electronics, such as using a multimeter and reading a circuit diagram. You can also practice wrapping cables properly and learning how to build both series and parallel circuits. Plenty of online resources and tutorials are available to help you get started.
